Hungarian to English
Certified Translation

🇭🇺 Záradékolt fordítás angol nyelvre

Hungarian is famously hard to translate well, and Irish officials notice when a name comes out back to front. Our native Hungarian translators convert anyakönyvi kivonatok, érettségi bizonyítványok, oklevelek and court decisions into precise English, keep ő and ű intact, and present names in the order your passport uses. Each translation carries a signed Certificate of Accuracy, our stamp and a reference number. All for €29.95 per page, and most orders are ready in 24 hours.

Hungarians in Ireland: Cork Leads the Way

Census 2022 found 9,586 people speaking Hungarian at home. Unlike most language groups, the largest single area is not Dublin City but Cork, with 1,758 speakers, ahead of Dublin City, Fingal and Tipperary. Many Hungarian families have settled outside the capital, and their children are now moving through Irish schools. The documents we translate reflect that: school and university certificates, civil records for citizenship and marriage, and qualifications for registration bodies.

Hungarian Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Születési anyakönyvi kivonat

Since Hungary’s registers went electronic in 2014, any registrar can print a kivonat. Older paper extracts look quite different. We translate either version, including the mother’s birth name, which Hungarian records always show.

Marriage certificate

Házassági anyakönyvi kivonat

Hungarian marriage extracts record the name each spouse will use afterwards, which can follow several legal patterns. We translate the chosen married name precisely, because it often explains a surname on an Irish document.

Final divorce judgment

Jogerős bontóítélet

A Hungarian divorce judgment is only final once it carries the jogerősítő záradék, the finality clause. We translate the judgment and that clause, which Irish registrars look for before a remarriage.

Certificate of good conduct

Hatósági erkölcsi bizonyítvány

Hungary’s criminal record certificate states whether you have a record and can confirm you are not barred from working with children. We translate every statement it contains, with its document number.

School-leaving certificate

Érettségi bizonyítvány

We translate the érettségi with every subject, the standard (középszint) or advanced (emelt szint) level and the percentage results, all of which the CAO uses when scoring applications.

Degree certificate and supplement

Oklevél és oklevélmelléklet

Hungarian degree certificates are issued with a diploma supplement listing modules, credits and grades. We translate both, and any nyelvvizsga-bizonyítvány (language exam certificate) that was a condition of the degree.

Identity card and address card

Személyazonosító igazolvány és lakcímkártya

Hungarians carry an identity card plus a separate address card. We translate both, keeping the personal identifier and card numbers exactly, for banks, landlords or Irish public bodies that ask.

Employer’s certificate

Munkáltatói igazolás

Letters from a Hungarian employer confirming your job title, dates and hours. We translate them for Irish recruiters and registration bodies, and keep company registration numbers (cégjegyzékszám) as printed.

FAQs

Hungarian Translation: Common Questions

How much does a Hungarian translation cost?+
€29.95 per page, with a page defined as 300 words of the Hungarian text. Most anyakönyvi kivonatok are one page, and an érettségi with its results is usually one or two. There is no surcharge for Hungarian.
How long does it take?+
Our standard is 24 hours for one to three pages, sent as a signed PDF. A full degree supplement or court file may take longer, and we confirm the date before you pay. Tight deadline? Ask about 12-hour expedited delivery.
Do I need an OFFI or sworn translation for Ireland?+
No. Ireland has no sworn translators, and Irish authorities accept certified translations from professional translators. The hiteles fordítás you may know from Hungary is a Hungarian requirement, not an Irish one. Our translation includes a signed certification clause, date, contact details and stamp.
Can I use a multilingual form from Hungary instead?+
In some cases. Hungary is in the EU, so under Regulation 2016/1191 you can ask for a multilingual standard form with a birth, marriage or death extract. ISD accepts it for EU Treaty Rights and citizenship, and the Civil Registration Service can accept it, but universities and most other bodies still expect a translation.
Can you translate Irish documents into Hungarian?+
Yes, for example an Irish birth certificate for registering a child in the Hungarian register. Hungarian authorities have traditionally required an officially certified translation made in Hungary, so check with the receiving office or the Hungarian Embassy in Dublin first.
How do you handle Hungarian name order and married names?+
Hungarian puts the family name first, so Nagy Katalin becomes Katalin Nagy in English, following your passport. Married forms such as Kovács Jánosné (literally Mrs János Kovács) are explained in a note, and ő, ű, á and é are never simplified.
I studied medicine in Hungary in English. Do I still need a translation?+
Only for documents not issued in English. English-programme transcripts usually need nothing, but the degree certificate itself may be in Hungarian or Latin, and some certificates are Hungarian only. Send them to us and we will tell you which pages need translating.
