Slovak Speakers from Cork to Co. Longford

Census 2022 recorded 9,336 people speaking Slovak at home. The largest group lives in Cork city and county, followed by Fingal, Dublin City and Kildare, and Co. Longford is home to 555 Slovak speakers, a notable share for a small county. Waterford also has a sizeable community. Census figures were almost the same in 2011 and 2016, a sign of a long-settled community, so we now translate as many documents for citizenship, weddings and Irish-born children as for jobs.

Slovak Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Rodný list

Issued by the matrika at your local office. We translate the parents’ names, the rodné číslo and any dodatočné záznamy (later entries), such as a determination of paternity or a change of surname.

Marriage certificate

Sobášny list

Covers civil and church weddings entered in the Slovak marriage register. We translate the agreed surname for each spouse and any note on the children’s surname, which Irish registrars sometimes query.

Divorce judgment

Rozsudok o rozvode manželstva

A Slovak divorce judgment must carry the doložka právoplatnosti (clause of legal effect) to prove it is final. We translate the ruling, the clause and any custody arrangements it sets out.

Death certificate

Úmrtný list

We translate the date, place and registration details of the death and the deceased’s marital status, as needed by Irish banks, pension providers and solicitors dealing with an estate.

Criminal record extract

Výpis z registra trestov

Available in paper or as an electronically signed extract. We translate the whole extract, including its verification code, so an employer or registration body in Ireland can check it.

Maturita certificate

Vysvedčenie o maturitnej skúške

We translate every subject, the grade on the Slovak scale of 1 to 5 and any percentile from the external test, with a short note that 1 is the top grade.

University diploma and supplement

Vysokoškolský diplom a dodatok k diplomu

Slovak degrees lead to titles such as Bc., Mgr., Ing. or PhDr. We translate the diploma, the dodatok with its credits and grades, and explain each title in English.

Social insurance record

Potvrdenie Sociálnej poisťovne

Statements from the Sociálna poisťovňa showing insured periods or benefit amounts. We translate every period and figure for SUSI, the Department of Social Protection or a pensions adviser.

FAQs

Slovak Translation: Common Questions

What does Slovak translation cost in Ireland?+
€29.95 per page, one page being 300 Slovak source words. A rodný list or sobášny list is a single page, and a maturita certificate usually is too. Slovak, Czech and every other language cost the same.
When will I receive my translation?+
Within 24 hours for most orders of one to three pages, by email as a signed PDF. Bigger files, such as a court judgment with annexes, take a little longer. We can also offer a 12-hour expedited turnaround on request.
Do I need a súdny prekladateľ or sworn translator?+
Not for Ireland, which has no sworn translators at all. Irish bodies work with certified translations prepared by professional translators. The úradný preklad made by a court-appointed translator in Slovakia is a Slovak requirement. Ours carries a signed Certificate of Accuracy, date, contact details and stamp.
Is a Slovak multilingual standard form enough?+
It can be. As an EU member, Slovakia issues multilingual standard forms under Regulation 2016/1191 with birth, marriage and death certificates. ISD accepts the form for EU Treaty Rights and citizenship, and the Civil Registration Service can too, but many other bodies still ask for a full English translation.
Can you translate Irish documents into Slovak?+
Yes, for instance an Irish birth certificate to register a child in the special register in Bratislava. Slovak offices often insist on an úradný preklad by a court-appointed translator in Slovakia, so check with the office or the Slovak Embassy in Dublin before ordering.
My surname is Nováková in Slovakia but Novák in Ireland. What happens?+
We translate the name exactly as the Slovak document shows it, including the feminine -ová ending, and can add the form used on your Irish records in brackets. Diacritics such as č, ľ, ô and ý are always kept.
My old documents are from Czechoslovakia and in Czech. Can you help?+
Yes. Certificates issued before 1993, and some later ones, may be in Czech. Our Slovak translators read Czech fluently, so the whole set is translated into English by the same person, at the same price.
