Chinese in Ireland

Students, Professionals and Families

Census 2022 recorded 24,709 people speaking Chinese at home, up from 17,584 in 2016, and 26,828 people gave a Chinese ethnic background, 38% more than in 2016. Dublin City had 5,155 Chinese speakers and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown 3,500. Our Chinese work reflects that mix: degree and transcript translations for postgraduate study and jobs, notarial certificates for marriage and citizenship, and household register pages for families registering a baby or proving a relationship.

Chinese Documents We Translate Most

Degree certificate

学位证书

Chinese graduates hold two parchments: the 毕业证书 (graduation certificate) and the 学位证书 (degree certificate). Irish universities and QQI NARIC usually want both, so we translate them as a matching set.

Academic transcript

成绩单

Lists each course with credits and percentage or GPA grades, stamped by the university registrar. We keep every grade and course name, and translate a CHSI (学信网) verification report too if you include it.

Medical birth certificate

出生医学证明

Issued by the hospital rather than a civil registry. Some Irish uses expect a 出生公证书 (notarial birth certificate) instead, so check which one your office wants before you order.

Household register

户口簿

The hukou booklet lists each household member with ID numbers, relationships and address changes. Bodies in Ireland may use it to show parentage or marital status, and we translate only the pages you need.

Marriage certificate

结婚证

The red booklet shows both spouses’ names, ID numbers, the registration date and the embossed seal of the marriage registry. Each spouse holds an identical copy, so either one can be translated.

Divorce certificate or judgment

离婚证 / 民事判决书

Agreed divorces are registered by the civil affairs bureau; contested ones end in a court judgment or mediation statement (民事调解书). To marry in Ireland, send whichever proves the divorce is final.

Criminal record certificate

无犯罪记录证明

Issued by the local public security bureau, often as a notarised version for use abroad. We translate the certificate and every notarial page attached, keeping the notary’s certificate number.

Driving licence

驾驶证

Chinese licences have no English text, so car hire firms and insurers in Ireland may ask for a translation. We translate the licence and its 副页 (supplementary page), including vehicle classes and validity dates.

Why Chinese Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

Postgraduate Study

Irish universities ask Chinese applicants for certified translations of the degree certificate, graduation certificate and transcript. We translate them together so names, dates and course titles match across the whole set.

Degree Recognition

Engineers, accountants and IT specialists often ask QQI NARIC to compare a Chinese 本科 degree with an Irish award. NARIC wants official translations of the parchment and transcript, which our stamp and contact details support.

Marriage Notification

Marrying in Ireland means three months’ notice to the HSE. A Chinese partner may need a notarised certificate of single status (未婚公证), and because China joined the Apostille Convention in November 2023, possibly an apostille on the original.

Citizenship

China does not recognise dual nationality, so consider the effect on your Chinese citizenship before applying for Irish naturalisation. If you apply, ISD wants a professional translation of your birth record plus a copy of the original.

Professional Registration

Pharmacists, nurses and other professionals registering with PSI, NMBI or CORU need diplomas and licences translated. We translate the 执业证书 (practising certificate) and professional title certificates alongside your degrees.

Documents Going to China

Irish documents used in mainland China, such as a degree or marriage certificate, usually need an apostille on the original from Ireland and often a translation by a qualified agency in China. Check the receiving office’s rules before you order.

FAQs

Chinese Translation: Common Questions

How much does Chinese translation cost in Ireland?+
€29.95 per page (1 page = 300 source words). A 结婚证 or 出生医学证明 is one page; a four-year transcript is usually one or two. There is no surcharge for Traditional characters or handwritten entries.
How fast is a Chinese translation?+
Orders of 1–3 pages are normally delivered in 24 hours. A complete application pack with degree, graduation certificate, transcript and notarial pages may take longer, and we confirm timing first. A 12-hour expedited service is available on request.
Does Ireland require a sworn or notarised Chinese translation?+
No sworn translation exists in Ireland, because there are no sworn translators here. Irish universities, QQI and the HSE ask for certified translations from professional translators. If your 公证书 already includes an English translation from the notary office, ask the receiving body whether that is enough before ordering.
Do I need an apostille on my Chinese documents?+
Sometimes. Since 7 November 2023 mainland China issues apostilles in place of consular legalisation, and for marriage notification a birth certificate from outside the EU may need one, so check with your registrar. Hong Kong has issued apostilles for many years.
Can you translate English documents into Chinese?+
Yes, into Simplified or Traditional Chinese at €29.95 per page. Chinese authorities often want a translation from a qualified agency in China or a notarised translation, so for official use there, check the rules first. For employers, schools and family use our translation fits well.
How will my Chinese name appear?+
As in your passport: surname and given name in pinyin, in the order the passport shows. We add the Chinese characters in brackets at the first mention, so staff in Ireland can match 王小明 to WANG Xiaoming on your IRP card.
Simplified or Traditional: does it matter?+
Not for price or turnaround. Mainland documents use Simplified characters, while Hong Kong, Taiwan and many older records use Traditional, and our translators read both. Hong Kong certificates are often bilingual already; if a body in Ireland still wants the Chinese entries translated, we can do that.
