Russian in Ireland

Russian Speakers From Across the Former USSR

Census 2022 counted 20,434 people speaking Russian at home, down slightly from 21,707 in 2016. Russian is a shared language for people from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, so the documents we see range from EU certificates to Soviet paperwork issued before 1991. Fingal had the largest group, 3,170 speakers, followed by Dublin City with 2,444. Typical needs are citizenship files, marriage notification, degree recognition and old birth or marriage records for family and estate matters.

Russian Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Свидетельство о рождении

Russian and Soviet birth certificates give parents’ names with patronymics, and older ones also record the parents’ nationality. We translate every line, including the ЗАГС stamp and the series and number.

Marriage certificate

Свидетельство о заключении брака

Shows each spouse’s surname before and after marriage and the ЗАГС that registered it. Duplicate copies (повторное свидетельство) are common, and we translate whichever you submit, including its issue date.

Divorce certificate

Свидетельство о расторжении брака

Issued by the ЗАГС after a registry or court divorce. Irish registrars may also ask for the court decision (решение суда) with the date it entered into force, so we translate both documents together.

Criminal record certificate

Справка о наличии (отсутствии) судимости

Issued by the Russian Interior Ministry, often requested through the Gosuslugi portal; Belarus and Kazakhstan issue their own versions. Irish employers may ask for one if you lived there as an adult.

Higher education diploma

Диплом о высшем образовании

Russian and Soviet diplomas come with a приложение listing subjects, hours and grades. QQI NARIC needs both translated, and an older специалист degree is best assessed with its full supplement.

School-leaving certificate

Аттестат о среднем общем образовании

Grades use the 5-point scale, and newer certificates may be paired with ЕГЭ results. We translate the аттестат, its приложение and any ЕГЭ certificate for Irish universities.

Work record book

Трудовая книжка

It can hold decades of handwritten entries with order numbers and stamps. If an employer or pension provider only needs your recent jobs, we translate just those pages, which keeps the cost down.

Death certificate

Свидетельство о смерти

Needed in Ireland to settle a relative’s estate, claim a pension or remarry after bereavement. We translate the date and place of death, the ЗАГС entry and, where printed, the cause of death.

Why Russian Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

Irish Citizenship

Naturalisation files need your birth certificate and marriage record translated by a professional translator, with a copy of the original. If yours is a Soviet-era document, we translate the USSR-format fields and emblem wording exactly.

Marriage Notification

Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are outside the EU, so a partner from there needs full translations and may need apostilles on the originals. Russian speakers born in the Baltic states can often use an EU multilingual form instead.

Degree Recognition

Engineers, IT specialists and scientists with Russian-language degrees use QQI NARIC to place them on the Irish framework. NARIC asks for official translations of the диплом and приложение, which we prepare together.

Registration Bodies

Doctors, nurses and pharmacists with Russian-language qualifications register with the Medical Council, NMBI or PSI, which want stamped, signed translations with contact details. We translate diplomas, internship records and certificates of good standing.

Estates and Old Family Records

Settling a relative’s estate, or proving a family link for an inheritance in Ireland, can depend on Soviet birth, marriage or death records. The Probate Office asks for an affidavit of translator with a foreign will, so ask your solicitor how it should be handled.

Pensions and Work History

Employers, SUSI and financial advisers sometimes need your work history in English to understand career breaks or earnings abroad. We translate трудовая книжка pages and pension certificates (пенсионное удостоверение) precisely.

FAQs

Russian Translation: Common Questions

How much does a Russian translation cost?+
€29.95 per page (1 page = 300 source words), whichever country issued the document. Most certificates are one page; a Soviet diploma supplement listing every subject and exam can reach three or four.
How quickly can I get a Russian translation?+
24 hours is standard for 1–3 pages. Handwritten Soviet entries are sometimes hard to read, and if a longer job needs extra time we tell you before you pay. A 12-hour expedited service can be arranged on request.
Is a sworn or notarised translation required in Ireland?+
Not for most uses. Ireland has no sworn translators, and Irish bodies accept certified translations from professional translators. Notarisation matters only in specific settings, such as court proceedings, the Probate Office, the Dental Council or the CRO, which may ask for a translator’s affidavit or a notarised translation, so check with that body or your solicitor before you order.
Do Russian-language documents need an apostille in Ireland?+
Only for some uses. Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Moldova all belong to the Apostille Convention, so where a body in Ireland asks for one, for example for a non-EU birth certificate at marriage notification, the apostille is added in the issuing country. We translate it along with the document.
Can you translate English into Russian?+
Yes, at €29.95 per page. Authorities in Russian-speaking countries often expect translations notarised locally or at a consulate, so if your document is for official use there, confirm the requirement first. For private, business and family use our certified Russian translation works well.
How do you transliterate Russian names?+
We follow your passport. Russian passports have changed transliteration rules over the years, so Юлия may appear as Yulia, Yuliya or Iuliia. We use the spelling in the passport you present in Ireland and keep patronymics, such as Ивановна (Ivanovna), in full.
My documents were issued in the USSR. Can you still translate them?+
Yes. Soviet birth and marriage certificates are still the only civil record many people hold, and Irish bodies decide for themselves how to treat them. We translate the USSR emblem wording, the ЗАГС details and handwritten entries, and note any stamp that is illegible.
