Arabic in Ireland

From the Levant, the Gulf and North Africa

Census 2022 counted 23,234 people speaking Arabic at home, up from 16,072 in 2016, and 20,115 people gave an Arab ethnic background. Most live in the Dublin area: Dublin City had 3,398 Arabic speakers, and Fingal, South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown each had more than 2,000. Arabic-speaking clients range from medical graduates registering with the Medical Council to families building a new life in Ireland, and their documents vary enormously from one country to the next, so we match each translation to the issuing state’s format.

Arabic Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

شهادة ميلاد

Formats differ by country: Syrian and Lebanese certificates come from the civil registry, while Egyptian computerised certificates carry the 14-digit national number. We translate every field, seal and signature.

Family register extract

إخراج قيد عائلي

Syrian and Lebanese families prove parentage and marital status with an ikhraj qaid. It is often used in Ireland as supporting evidence of family relationships, and we translate each family member listed.

Marriage contract

عقد زواج

Arabic marriage contracts record the mahr, the witnesses, the guardian (wali) and any conditions. We translate every clause and court or registry stamp, with a translator’s note where a term has no English equivalent.

Divorce certificate

وثيقة طلاق

A divorce may be registered by a Sharia court, a civil court or a ma’dhun. To remarry in Ireland you need proof the divorce is final, so bring every document you hold and we translate them all.

Secondary school certificate

شهادة الثانوية العامة

Called Tawjihi in Jordan and Palestine, Thanaweya Amma in Egypt and the Baccalaureate in Syria. We translate subject scores and totals exactly, because Irish universities assess applicants on those numbers.

Medical degree

بكالوريوس الطب والجراحة

Many medical degrees from Sudan, Egypt or Iraq are partly in English already. The Medical Council wants translations officially stamped by an official translator, so we translate the Arabic parts, seals and signatures.

Criminal record certificate

صحيفة الحالة الجنائية

Names vary: فيش جنائي in Egypt, شهادة عدم محكومية in Jordan, وثيقة غير محكوم in Syria. Irish employers may ask for one from each country you lived in, and we translate whichever you have.

Academic transcript

كشف درجات

University transcripts list courses, credit hours and grades, sometimes on a GPA scale Irish institutions do not use. We keep the original scale without conversion and leave recognition to QQI NARIC or the university.

Why Arabic Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

Irish Citizenship

Naturalisation applicants submit a birth certificate and any marriage record, and ISD wants a translation by a professional translator with a copy of the original. We keep your name spelling identical to the passport and IRP card you submit.

Medical Council and Health Careers

Doctors, pharmacists and nurses from Arabic-speaking countries register with the Medical Council, PSI or NMBI. Each asks for stamped, signed translations with the translator’s contact details, which our certificate includes as standard.

Marriage Notification

For a marriage in Ireland, a birth certificate from outside the EU may need an apostille or legalisation. Some Arab states issue apostilles and others still legalise through the foreign ministry and an embassy; we translate the document with whichever stamp it has.

Universities and the CAO

Tawjihi and Thanaweya Amma holders applying to Irish universities, and graduates starting a master’s, need certified translations of results and transcripts. The CAO’s rule is that an official translation is done by a professional translation service provider.

Registering a Baby Born in Ireland

If you married abroad, the HSE asks for your original marriage certificate when you register your baby’s birth, translated by a certified translation service. We translate the عقد زواج in full, including the mahr and witness details.

Court and Family Law Matters

When an Arabic divorce or custody ruling is used in Irish proceedings, the court needs a translation by a suitably qualified translator plus a translator’s affidavit. We provide the certified translation. Ask your solicitor how the affidavit should be handled.

FAQs

Arabic Translation: Common Questions

What does an Arabic translation cost?+
€29.95 per page (1 page = 300 source words). Arabic costs the same as any other language, with no fee for right-to-left script or handwritten entries. A marriage contract with several conditions may run to two pages, and we quote the exact total before you pay.
How long does Arabic translation take?+
Most documents of 1–3 pages are delivered within 24 hours. Handwritten civil registry entries or long court rulings can need more time, and we tell you before you order. A 12-hour expedited service is available on request.
Do I need a sworn Arabic translator in Ireland?+
No. Ireland has no sworn translators, unlike several Arab countries where courts or ministries authorise their own translators. Irish authorities accept certified translations from professional translators, signed, dated and with contact details, which is exactly what we provide.
Does my document need an apostille or legalisation?+
It depends on the country and the use. Morocco, Tunisia, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are among the Arab states that issue apostilles, while others, such as Egypt, Jordan and Syria, use legalisation. The stamp goes on the original in the issuing country, and we then translate the document and the stamp together.
Can you translate English into Arabic?+
Yes, at €29.95 per page, for example an Irish birth certificate or degree going to family or an employer abroad. Many Arab countries require Irish documents to be legalised and some insist on a locally licensed translator, so check with the embassy or receiving authority before ordering.
How do you handle Arabic names and Hijri dates?+
Names follow your passport, so Mohammed stays Mohammed rather than Muhammad if that is how your passport reads. Hijri dates are translated as written, with the Gregorian equivalent added where it helps the reader in Ireland, and Eastern Arabic numerals are rendered as standard digits.
My documents were damaged or I only have a photo. Can you still translate them?+
Yes. We translate from a clear scan or photo, including worn or partly legible documents, and mark any unreadable section as [illegible] rather than guessing. Whether an Irish body accepts a copy is its own decision, so check what it asks for before you submit.
