Spanish in Ireland

Spanish Speakers From Spain and Latin America

Census 2022 counted 48,113 people speaking Spanish at home, up from 32,405 in 2016, and a further 18,966 of them were born in Ireland. The largest concentration is in Dublin City, with 12,895 speakers, followed by Cork City and County with 5,183. Because the community includes people from Spain and from across Latin America, we see EU certificates that can come with a multilingual form alongside Mexican, Argentinian and Colombian records that need a full translation and sometimes an apostille.

Spanish Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Certificación literal de nacimiento

The Registro Civil issues literal (full) and extracto (short) versions. The literal copy carries every marginal note, so it is the version we suggest for naturalisation or the Foreign Births Register.

Latin American marriage record

Acta de matrimonio

Mexican, Colombian and Argentinian marriage records are titled acta or partida de matrimonio. Being non-EU documents, they may need an apostille from the issuing country for Irish use, and we translate the apostille too.

Divorce judgment

Sentencia de divorcio

In Spain a divorce is also noted in the margin of the marriage entry. Irish registrars look for proof that the decree is firme (final), so send the sentencia with its firmeza wording or the annotated marriage certificate.

Criminal record certificate

Certificado de antecedentes penales

Spain’s Ministerio de Justicia issues it, including online with a secure verification code. Latin American countries issue their own versions, often from the national police, and we translate whichever you hold.

Bachillerato certificate

Título de Bachiller

Translated with your university entrance exam results (PAU or EBAU, still widely called selectividad). We keep grades on the Spanish 0–10 scale exactly as printed, never converted.

University degree

Título de Grado / Licenciatura

Spanish degrees usually come with a Suplemento Europeo al Título (SET). QQI NARIC asks for official translations of the parchment and transcript, and the SET makes credits and grading easy to compare.

Nursing degree

Título de Graduado en Enfermería

Spanish nurses registering with NMBI send the degree, the academic record and a certificate of good standing from their Colegio Oficial de Enfermería, each translated, signed and stamped with our contact details.

Academic transcript

Certificación académica personal

Lists every asignatura with credits, sitting (convocatoria) and grade. Teaching Council subject checks depend on the credit breakdown, so we reproduce module names and ECTS values line by line.

Why Spanish Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

Nursing and Midwifery (NMBI)

NMBI asks for translations signed and stamped by a qualified translator with phone, address and email. We translate the whole application pack, from título and certificación académica to the good-standing letter, with consistent terminology throughout.

Teaching Council Registration

Spanish teachers registering at post-primary level must show enough ECTS credits in each subject they teach. We translate transcripts module by module so the Teaching Council can check each one against its subject criteria.

EU Treaty Rights for Latin American Spouses

Latin American spouses of Spanish citizens apply to ISD under EU Treaty Rights. A Spanish certificate with a multilingual form needs no translation, but a Mexican or Colombian acta de nacimiento does, and we translate it with any apostille.

Marriage Notification

Couples give the HSE three months’ notice. A partner from Spain can bring a certificado with a multilingual form; a Latin American partner usually needs the birth certificate translated and, depending on the registrar, apostilled.

CAO and Irish Universities

Students with a Bachillerato apply through the CAO, and graduates apply directly for postgraduate study. The CAO’s rule is that an official translation is one carried out by a professional translation service provider.

Documents Going to Spain

Irish documents used in Spain, such as a degree for homologación, usually need a traducción jurada by a traductor-intérprete jurado appointed in Spain. Check first; we translate into Spanish for employers and private uses that accept a certified translation.

FAQs

Spanish Translation: Common Questions

How much does Spanish translation cost in Ireland?+
€29.95 per page, where a page is 300 words of the source document, whether it comes from Spain, Mexico or Argentina. A certificación literal is normally one page; a full nursing application pack is quoted on its total word count before you pay.
How long does a Spanish translation take?+
24 hours is our standard for 1–3 pages. Larger packs, such as a four-year certificación académica with course descriptions, take longer and we confirm the date first. A 12-hour expedited service is available on request.
Do I need a traducción jurada for Irish authorities?+
No. Ireland has no sworn translators, so Irish bodies do not need a traductor jurado. They accept certified translations from professional translators, signed and dated with the translator’s details, and ours add a company stamp and reference number.
What about the EU multilingual standard form?+
Spanish Registro Civil certificates can be issued with an EU multilingual standard form under Regulation 2016/1191, and ISD (EU Treaty Rights, citizenship) and the HSE Civil Registration Service accept it in place of a translation. Many other bodies still ask for a translation, and Latin American certificates are outside the scheme altogether.
Do you translate English into Spanish?+
Yes, into Spanish for Spain or Latin America, at the same price. For official use in Spain, authorities usually insist on a traducción jurada made there, and many Latin American countries have their own rules, so check with the receiving office before you order.
How do you handle two surnames?+
We keep both apellidos in their original order, for example García Fernández, with accents and ñ intact. If your Irish documents show only the first surname or join the two with a hyphen, tell us and we add a translator’s note linking both forms.
Can you translate the apostille on a Latin American document?+
Yes. Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile and most of Latin America issue apostilles, several of them electronically with a QR code or online verification link. We translate the apostille with the document and keep the verification code intact so the receiving body in Ireland can check it.
