Italian in Ireland

A Young, Growing Italian Community in Ireland

Census 2022 recorded 18,725 people speaking Italian at home, 29% more than in 2016. More than half live in Co. Dublin, with Cork the next largest area. The community mixes students, working professionals and families, and 5,426 of those Italian speakers were born in Ireland. That mix explains the documents we see most, from lauree and Albo certificates for registration bodies to birth and marriage records for citizenship, and Irish certificates going the other way for Italian registration.

Italian Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Estratto dell’atto di nascita

Your Comune issues a short certificato or a fuller estratto. The estratto is usually safer for Irish use because it carries annotations such as recognition or name changes, which we translate in full.

Marriage certificate

Estratto dell’atto di matrimonio

Covers civil and concordat church marriages registered with the Comune. We translate the property regime notes (regime patrimoniale) and any later separation or divorce annotations in the margin.

Certificate of free status

Certificato di stato libero

Issued by the Ufficio di Stato Civile or Anagrafe of your Comune. We translate it for marriage notification, noting its issue date, since registrars often want a recent certificate.

Divorce judgment

Sentenza di divorzio

Italian divorce follows a legal separation and ends with a court sentenza, or with an agreement reached through negoziazione assistita. We translate the decision and its certificate of finality (passaggio in giudicato).

Criminal record certificate

Certificato del casellario giudiziale

Requested from the Procura della Repubblica. We translate the certificate and, if you supply it, the separate certificato dei carichi pendenti on pending proceedings, which some employers ask to see.

School-leaving diploma

Diploma di esame di Stato (maturità)

We translate the diploma and the accompanying curriculum dello studente or grade certificate, showing the final mark out of 100 and the subjects of your liceo or istituto tecnico.

Medical register certificate

Certificato di iscrizione all’Albo

Issued by the provincial Ordine dei Medici Chirurghi e degli Odontoiatri. We translate your registration number, date of enrolment and any disciplinary statement for the Medical Council file.

Handwritten or public will

Testamento olografo o pubblico

A handwritten Italian will is published by a notary in a verbale di pubblicazione. We translate both the will and the verbale. Ask your solicitor how the translator’s affidavit for the Probate Office should be handled.

FAQs

Italian Translation: Common Questions

How much is an Italian certified translation?+
€29.95 per page of 300 Italian source words. A certificato or estratto from the Comune is normally one page, while a laurea transcript can run to two or three. The rate is the same for every language.
What turnaround can I expect?+
One to three pages are usually delivered within 24 hours. For a long Medical Council file or a will with its verbale, we give you a delivery date before you pay. If you have a hard deadline, ask about our 12-hour expedited service.
Do I need a traduzione giurata for use in Ireland?+
No. In Italy a traduzione asseverata or giurata is sworn before a court official, but Ireland has no sworn translators. Irish authorities accept certified translations from professional translators, signed and dated with the translator’s details, which is what we provide.
Can I use an Italian multilingual form instead of a translation?+
Sometimes. Since Italy is an EU member, your Comune can issue a multilingual standard form under Regulation 2016/1191 with a birth, marriage or death certificate. ISD accepts it for EU Treaty Rights and citizenship, and the Civil Registration Service may too, but universities, employers and registration bodies usually still ask for a translation.
Can you translate Irish certificates into Italian for my Comune or AIRE?+
Yes, we translate Irish birth, marriage and death certificates into Italian. Italian offices often want a translation certified in a specific way, such as a traduzione asseverata or one checked by the consulate, so ask the Embassy of Italy in Dublin or your Comune which form it needs before ordering.
Will apostrophes and accents in my name survive?+
Yes. Surnames such as D’Angelo, Dell’Olio or De Luca, and first names like Niccolò, are copied exactly, including spacing and accents. Italian records also list women under their birth surname, so we add a short note if your Irish documents use a married name.
I have Italian citizenship but was born in Brazil or Argentina. Can you help?+
Yes. Many Italian citizens in Ireland hold birth or marriage records in Portuguese or Spanish rather than Italian. We translate those as well, at the same price, and can match the spelling to your Italian passport.
