Portuguese in Ireland

Portuguese Has More Than Doubled in Irish Homes

Census 2022 counted 43,985 people speaking Portuguese at home, up from 20,833 in 2016, and most of that growth came from Brazil: almost 5,200 people came to Ireland from Brazil in the year before the census. Dublin City alone had 14,643 Portuguese speakers. Brazilian documents need an English translation for almost every Irish use, and because Brazil is outside the EU, some also need an apostille from Brazil. Clients from Portugal, Angola and Mozambique bring their own formats, which we know just as well.

Portuguese Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Certidão de Nascimento

Issued by the Cartório de Registro Civil. For Irish use a recent certidão em inteiro teor, the full-content copy, shows every annotation, and we reproduce the 32-digit matrícula number exactly.

Marriage certificate

Certidão de Casamento

States the regime de bens, such as comunhão parcial de bens, and carries any averbação of divorce or name change. A recently issued copy shows your current status for marriage notification or an EUTR file.

Divorce decree or deed

Sentença de divórcio / Escritura pública de divórcio

Brazilian divorces are granted by a court or, where uncontested, by public deed at a cartório. We translate either one, together with the averbação on your marriage certificate that records the divorce.

Criminal record certificate

Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais

Issued online by the Polícia Federal with a validation code, or by the state civil police. We translate the code and issue date so an Irish employer can check the certificate is genuine and recent.

Secondary school certificate

Certificado de Conclusão do Ensino Médio

Translated with the histórico escolar listing subjects and grades for each year. Irish universities want the whole record in English, so both documents are delivered as one consistent translation.

University diploma

Diploma de Graduação

Brazilian bacharelado and licenciatura diplomas often carry registration stamps on the back. QQI NARIC wants the parchment and transcript officially translated to place the qualification on the Irish framework.

Driving licence

Carteira Nacional de Habilitação (CNH)

The CNH doubles as an identity document in Brazil. Car hire firms and insurers in Ireland may ask for an English version, so we translate the categories, first-licence date and observações field.

Identity card

Registro Geral (RG) / Cartão de Cidadão

A Brazilian RG or Portuguese Cartão de Cidadão is sometimes needed to show parents’ names or a CPF number. We translate front and back, including the filiação (parentage) fields.

Why Portuguese Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

Getting Married in Ireland

The HSE Civil Registration Service needs three months’ notice and both partners’ birth certificates, translated if not in English or Irish. A Brazilian certificate may also need an apostille, which Brazilian cartórios can add to the original.

EU Treaty Rights for Family Members

Brazilians married to a Portuguese, Italian or other EU citizen apply to ISD under EU Treaty Rights. A Portuguese certificate with a multilingual standard form needs no translation; a Brazilian certidão always does.

Degree Recognition with QQI NARIC

Engineers, teachers and IT professionals often ask NARIC Ireland to compare a Brazilian bacharelado with an Irish award. We translate the diploma and histórico escolar together, keeping course codes, carga horária and grades.

Postgraduate Study

Irish universities admitting Brazilian graduates to a master’s or PhD ask for certified translations of the diploma and transcript. We keep course titles faithful to the original and explain Brazilian grading terms in a translator’s note where useful.

Registering Your Baby’s Birth

Parents who married in Brazil and have a baby in Ireland show their marriage certificate when registering the birth. The HSE wants the certidão de casamento translated by a certified translation service, and we usually deliver within a day.

Documents Going to Brazil or Portugal

Brazil normally wants foreign documents translated in Brazil by a tradutor público (tradução juramentada), and Portugal often has translations certified by a notary, lawyer or consulate. Check with the receiving office before ordering an English to Portuguese translation.

FAQs

Portuguese Translation: Common Questions

How much is a Portuguese translation in Ireland?+
€29.95 per page (1 page = 300 source words), the same for Brazilian and European Portuguese. A certidão em inteiro teor is usually one or two pages. If an office wants paper, add a hard copy by tracked post at checkout.
How quickly can you translate my certidão?+
Most orders of 1–3 pages are delivered in 24 hours. A diploma with a long histórico escolar takes a little longer, and we tell you when before you pay. If your registrar appointment is only days away, ask for our 12-hour expedited service.
Do I need a tradução juramentada in Ireland?+
No. Ireland has no sworn translators, so there is no Irish tradutor público. Irish bodies accept certified translations from professional translators, signed and dated with the translator’s contact details. A tradução juramentada made in Brazil is not required for Irish use.
Does my Brazilian certificate need an apostille?+
It can, depending on the Irish use. Citizens Information notes that a birth certificate issued outside the EU may need an apostille or legalisation for marriage notification. Brazil joined the Apostille Convention in 2016 and its cartórios issue apostilles. Get the apostille on the original first, then send us both pages so we translate them together.
Can you translate from English into Portuguese?+
Yes, into Brazilian or European Portuguese at €29.95 per page, useful for Irish employers’ letters, school reports and family documents. For official use in Brazil, where a tradutor público is normally required, or in Portugal, check the receiving body’s rules before ordering.
My name has two surnames and accents. How will it appear?+
Exactly as on your passport. Brazilian names often carry both the mother’s and the father’s surnames, plus Filho, Júnior or Neto, and letters such as ã, ç and é. We never shorten or reorder them, so the translation matches your IRP card and PPS record.
I am from Portugal. Is anything different for me?+
Yes. Portuguese civil-status certificates are EU documents, so they need no apostille in Ireland and can come with an EU multilingual standard form, which may save you a translation for EU Treaty Rights or citizenship. Universities and employers usually still want a certified translation of a Portuguese diploma or certidão.
