French in Ireland

French at Home, From Paris to Kinshasa

Census 2022 counted 51,568 people speaking French at home, and 32,244 French speakers were born in Ireland, more than for any other foreign language, which suggests many bilingual Irish families. Alongside them are people from France, Belgium, Switzerland and francophone Africa. Dublin City had 8,266 French speakers and Cork City and County 6,830. Our French work covers CAO and university applications, Teaching Council registration for teachers of French, marriage notification, and African civil records that may need legalisation or an apostille.

French Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Copie intégrale d’acte de naissance

French mairies issue a copie intégrale (full copy) and an extrait with or without filiation. For citizenship or the Foreign Births Register, the copie intégrale with its mentions marginales is the safer choice.

Family record book

Livret de famille

The French family booklet records the marriage and each child’s birth. Registrars in Ireland usually want the acte de mariage itself, so we translate whichever you hold, or both if the registrar asks.

Divorce judgment or agreement

Jugement de divorce / Convention de divorce

Since 2017 many French divorces by mutual consent are agreements lodged with a notaire rather than court judgments. We translate the jugement or the convention with its deposit certificate, plus the annotated marriage entry.

Criminal record extract

Extrait de casier judiciaire (bulletin n° 3)

France’s criminal record extract can be requested free online. Irish employers and registration bodies may ask for it next to Garda vetting, and we translate the bulletin n° 3 exactly, including the ‘néant’ entry.

Baccalaureate diploma

Diplôme du baccalauréat

Translated with the relevé de notes showing each épreuve and the final mark out of 20. Irish universities use those marks to assess EU applicants, so we never round or convert them.

University degree

Diplôme de Licence / Master

French degrees come with a supplément au diplôme and ECTS credits. QQI NARIC and the Teaching Council rely on the credit breakdown, so we translate course titles and credits line by line.

Supplementary birth judgment

Jugement supplétif d’acte de naissance

In several francophone African countries a late-registered birth is proven by a court judgment. Irish bodies may ask for it with the birth certificate, and we translate both, with court stamps and any legalisation.

Teaching qualification

Certificat d’aptitude au professorat (CAPES)

Teachers trained in France register with the Teaching Council using their teaching qualification, degree transcripts and service records. We translate each one, stamped and signed with our full contact details.

Why French Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

CAO and Irish Universities

French and Belgian students apply to Irish universities with a baccalauréat or a CESS. The CAO asks for an official translation, defined as one carried out by a professional translation service provider, which is what we deliver.

Teaching Council

Teachers of French trained in France or Belgium register with the Teaching Council, which wants translations stamped and signed by a qualified translator with contact details. We translate the diplôme, supplément and teaching practice records.

Marriage Notification

A French or Belgian partner may use a multilingual form with the acte de naissance; a partner from Congo, Cameroon or Côte d’Ivoire usually needs a full translation and possibly legalisation of the original. Give the HSE three months’ notice.

Citizenship and Passports

French citizens naturalising in Ireland, and Irish parents of children born in France, need translated civil records. The Passport Office asks for a certified translation into English or Irish of any foreign birth or marriage certificate.

Health and Social Care Registration

Nurses, physiotherapists and social care workers trained in France, Belgium or francophone Africa register with NMBI or CORU. Both ask for signed, stamped translations with contact details, which our certificate carries.

Documents Going to France

French authorities usually want a traducteur expert près une cour d’appel, a court-appointed translator in France. Check before ordering; for employers, landlords, schools and many private uses our English to French translation can be used.

FAQs

French Translation: Common Questions

What does a French translation cost?+
€29.95 per page (300 source words). An extrait d’acte is one page; a copie intégrale with marginal notes, or a baccalauréat with its relevé de notes, is usually one or two. The price is the same for every French-speaking country.
How soon will my French translation be ready?+
Most 1–3 page orders arrive within 24 hours as a signed, stamped PDF. For a thicker file, such as a Teaching Council application, we confirm a delivery date before you pay. A 12-hour expedited service is available on request.
Do I need a traduction assermentée for Ireland?+
No. Ireland has no sworn translators, so there is no Irish counterpart to the French traducteur assermenté. Irish bodies accept certified translations from professional translators, signed, dated and with the translator’s contact details, and ours also carry a company stamp and reference number.
Can I use a multilingual form instead of a translation?+
For civil-status documents from France, Belgium or Luxembourg, often yes. Under EU Regulation 2016/1191 the mairie can attach a multilingual standard form, which ISD (EU Treaty Rights, citizenship) and the HSE Civil Registration Service take in place of a translation. Universities and employers usually still want one, and Swiss and African documents are outside the scheme.
Do you translate English into French?+
Yes, at €29.95 per page. For official use in France, Belgium or Switzerland, check whether the office wants a court-appointed translator in that country, as many do. For employers, landlords, schools and private use, our certified French translation suits most needs.
Will you keep accents and particles in names?+
Yes. Names such as Hélène, François or Marie-Thérèse de la Fontaine are copied exactly, with accents, hyphens and particles like de, du and d’. If your Irish documents show a name without accents, we can add a translator’s note linking the two spellings.
My documents are from francophone Africa. What should I know?+
Birth and marriage records from countries such as DR Congo, Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire are often handwritten, or registered late by court judgment. Irish registrars may ask for legalisation of the original, or an apostille where the country issues them; we translate the document and every stamp on it.
