Lithuanian in Ireland

A Settled Community Well Beyond Dublin

Census 2022 recorded 34,885 people speaking Lithuanian at home, almost unchanged from 35,362 in 2016, which points to a settled community rather than new arrivals. It is also unusually spread out: Co. Meath had 3,607 Lithuanian speakers, the highest of any local authority area, and Co. Monaghan had 2,396, more than Dublin City’s 1,822. Our Lithuanian orders reflect that settled life: naturalisation, marriages, brandos atestatas results for the CAO, degree recognition, and older civil records needed when family matters in Lithuania and Ireland overlap.

Lithuanian Documents We Translate Most

Birth record extract

Gimimo įrašo išrašas

Civil registry offices now issue an extract of the birth record, while older families hold a gimimo liudijimas. We translate either, with every parent detail, the record number and the issuing office.

Marriage record extract

Santuokos įrašo išrašas

Shows the surnames both spouses chose on marriage, for example Kazlauskas and Kazlauskienė. We keep both forms so a reader in Ireland can see why a husband and wife carry different endings.

Divorce record extract

Santuokos nutraukimo įrašo išrašas

The civil registry records a divorce granted by a Lithuanian court. For marriage notification in Ireland the Registrar may also want the court decision (teismo sprendimas), so we translate both.

Maturity certificate

Brandos atestatas

Comes with a priedas listing your valstybiniai brandos egzaminai scores out of 100. We translate every subject and score so Irish universities can assess you as an EU applicant.

Bachelor’s diploma

Bakalauro diplomas

Lithuanian bachelor’s and magistro diplomas come with a diploma supplement (diplomo priedėlis). QQI NARIC and Irish employers use it to compare credits, grades and the level of your qualification.

Driving licence

Vairuotojo pažymėjimas

An EU licence, yet some Irish insurers and car hire desks still ask for an English version of the licence, or of a Lithuanian insurer’s claims history, before they offer cover.

Criminal record certificate

Pažyma apie teistumą

Lithuanian criminal record certificates can be ordered online through the national e-government gateway. Irish employers in care, education and security may ask for one alongside Garda vetting.

Social insurance statement

Sodros pažyma

Sodra statements show insured periods and pension entitlements. We translate them for SUSI income assessments and for Irish financial advisers when your working life spans both countries.

Why Lithuanian Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

Naturalisation

Lithuania restricts dual citizenship, so many Lithuanians weigh the decision carefully before applying for Irish citizenship. If you go ahead, ISD needs a professional translation of your birth record and any marriage or divorce record, with a copy of the originals.

Marriage Notification

The HSE Civil Registration Service needs three months’ notice. A Lithuanian partner can bring a birth record extract with an EU multilingual form; if you were divorced in Lithuania, bring the divorce record too, translated.

Registering Irish-Born Children in Lithuania

Recording a child born in Ireland with the Lithuanian civil registry means presenting the Irish birth certificate in Lithuanian. Some offices take a professional translation, others want it certified by a notary, so check before ordering.

CAO and Third Level

School leavers who sat their brandos egzaminai in Lithuania apply through the CAO as EU applicants. Our translation of the atestatas and priedas is prepared for that, since the CAO wants a translation by a professional translation service provider.

Car Insurance and Driving

Some Irish insurers will consider a claims history from a Lithuanian insurer. We translate the insurer’s letter and your vairuotojo pažymėjimas so the broker can read the dates, categories and any claims.

Family Law and Probate

When a Lithuanian will or court decision affects assets or children in Ireland, the Probate Office and Irish courts ask for a translation with a translator’s affidavit. Ask your solicitor how the affidavit should be handled.

FAQs

Lithuanian Translation: Common Questions

How much does a Lithuanian translation cost?+
€29.95 per page (300 source words). A civil registry išrašas is one page; a brandos atestatas with its priedas is usually two. There is no extra charge for Lithuanian, and a posted hard copy by tracked post is optional at checkout.
When will I receive my Lithuanian translation?+
Standard delivery is 24 hours for 1–3 pages, sent as a signed PDF by email. Bigger jobs such as a court file take longer, and we give you a date upfront. A 12-hour expedited service is available on request.
Is there a sworn translator requirement in Ireland?+
No. Ireland has no sworn translators and no official register of translators. Irish bodies accept certified translations from professional translators. Ours carry a signed certificate, the translator’s name, the date, our stamp and our full contact details, which is what Irish bodies ask to see.
Can I skip the translation with the EU multilingual form?+
For some uses. A Lithuanian civil registry can attach an EU multilingual standard form to birth, marriage and death extracts, and ISD (EU Treaty Rights and citizenship) and the HSE Civil Registration Service accept it instead of a translation. Universities, insurers, courts and employers typically still want a full certified translation.
Can you translate Irish documents into Lithuanian?+
Yes, at €29.95 per page, for Irish birth and marriage certificates, school reports and employment letters going to Lithuania. Lithuanian institutions set their own rules on certification and some want a notarised translation, so confirm what the office needs before you order.
How do you handle Lithuanian surname endings?+
We never anglicise them. Jonaitis, Jonaitienė and Jonaitytė are one family name in the forms used for a man, a married woman and an unmarried woman, and we keep each exactly as written, with letters such as ė, ū and ž. A translator’s note can explain the forms if a registrar or employer is unsure.
My documents are from the Soviet period. Can you translate them?+
Yes. Lithuanian records issued before 1990 may be in Russian, or in both Lithuanian and Russian. Our translators read both, and we render names to match your current Lithuanian passport rather than the Russian spelling on the old record.
