Polish in Ireland

Ireland’s Most Spoken Foreign Language

Census 2022 counted 123,968 people speaking Polish at home, more than any other language apart from English and Irish, and 32,060 Polish speakers were born in Ireland. Many families have now been here for well over a decade, with children in Irish schools and careers built here. So the Polish documents we translate are long-term ones: naturalisation files, marriage notification, a matura result for the CAO, NMBI registration, or a relative’s estate handled by an Irish solicitor. Outside Dublin, Cork City and County had the largest group, 17,314 Polish speakers.

Polish Documents We Translate Most

Birth certificate

Odpis zupełny aktu urodzenia

The Urząd Stanu Cywilnego issues short and full copies. For naturalisation or the Foreign Births Register the full copy is safer, because it shows later annotations such as a changed surname or recognised paternity.

Marriage certificate

Odpis skrócony aktu małżeństwa

Records the surname each spouse chose and the surname agreed for future children. We translate those declarations word for word, which matters when your IRP, PPS record and passport use a married name.

Divorce judgment

Wyrok rozwodowy z klauzulą prawomocności

A judgment from the Sąd Okręgowy proves you are free to marry only once it carries the finality clause. Send the stamped final version so the Registrar in Ireland can see the divorce has taken effect.

Criminal record certificate

Zaświadczenie z Krajowego Rejestru Karnego

Often called a zaświadczenie o niekaralności. Employers in healthcare, childcare and education may ask for it alongside Garda vetting if you lived in Poland as an adult. We translate the paper or the electronically issued version.

Matura certificate

Świadectwo dojrzałości

Lists each matura subject at poziom podstawowy or rozszerzony with a percentage result. We keep every level and percentage exactly, because Irish universities rely on them when assessing EU applicants.

University diploma

Dyplom ukończenia studiów wyższych

Best translated together with the suplement do dyplomu, which explains ECTS credits and grading. QQI NARIC and Irish employers use the supplement to compare your degree with an Irish award.

Employment certificate

Świadectwo pracy

The Polish employment certificate states your job title, dates, working hours and how the contract ended. Registration bodies and employers in Ireland use it to confirm experience, so each legal clause is translated carefully.

Nursing practice certificate

Zaświadczenie o prawie wykonywania zawodu

Issued by your Okręgowa Izba Pielęgniarek i Położnych. NMBI asks for translations signed and stamped by a qualified translator with a phone number, address and email, all of which our certificate shows.

Why Polish Speakers in Ireland Need Certified Translations

Irish Citizenship

Polish citizens can apply for naturalisation after five years’ reckonable residence. ISD asks for a translation by a professional translator plus a copy of the original, so we translate your akt urodzenia and any marriage or name-change record.

Marriage Notification

Couples marrying in Ireland give at least three months’ notice to the HSE Civil Registration Service. A Polish partner brings a birth certificate and, if divorced, the final wyrok; a multilingual standard form may replace a translation of the birth certificate.

CAO and Third Level

Applying to an Irish university with a Polish matura? The CAO says an official translation is one carried out by a professional translation service provider, which is exactly what our certified translation of your świadectwo dojrzałości is.

Nursing and Health Registration

Polish nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and radiographers register with NMBI or CORU. Both want translations signed and stamped by a qualified translator with contact details, and we translate the diploma, supplement and professional status letter as one set.

Wills and Probate

If a relative who lived in Ireland left a will written in Polish, the Probate Office admits it in terms of a translation, supported by an affidavit of translator. We prepare the certified translation. Ask your solicitor how the affidavit should be handled.

Irish Documents Going to Poland

Registering an Irish-born child in Poland, or relying on an Irish divorce there, means translating Irish documents into Polish. Polish offices often insist on their own sworn translator in Poland (tłumacz przysięgły), so check with the office or consulate first.

FAQs

Polish Translation: Common Questions

How much does a Polish translation cost in Ireland?+
€29.95 per page (1 page = 300 source words), the same as every other language. A Polish odpis skrócony usually fits on one page; an odpis zupełny with several annotations may run to two. A hard copy by tracked post can be added at checkout.
How fast can I get a Polish document translated?+
Standard turnaround is 24 hours for 1–3 pages. A long court judgment or a full set of university records takes longer, and we confirm the delivery time before you pay. A 12-hour expedited service is available on request.
Do I need a tłumaczenie przysięgłe for Irish authorities?+
No. Ireland has no sworn translators, so there is no Irish counterpart to the Polish tłumacz przysięgły. Irish authorities accept certified translations from professional translators. ISD, for example, describes a certified translation as one from a translator or translation company with an established professional reputation, signed and dated with their contact details.
Can a multilingual standard form replace the translation?+
Sometimes. Under EU Regulation 2016/1191 a Polish USC can issue a multilingual standard form with your birth or marriage certificate, and ISD (for EU Treaty Rights and citizenship) and the HSE Civil Registration Service accept it in place of a translation. Universities, employers and insurers still tend to ask for a full certified translation.
Can you translate Irish documents into Polish?+
Yes, at the same €29.95 per page: Irish birth certificates, Leaving Cert results, divorce decrees and employment letters. Be aware that many Polish offices, such as a USC transcribing an Irish birth certificate, want a translation from a sworn translator in Poland, so ask the receiving office before you order.
Will my name keep letters like ł and ś?+
Yes. We copy names exactly as they appear on the Polish document, with ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź and ż intact. If an Irish record already shows your name without them, for example Lukasz instead of Łukasz on a PPS card, tell us and we add a translator’s note so both spellings can be matched.
Can you translate a ZUS pension decision?+
Yes. SUSI grant assessments, Irish financial advisers and some Department of Social Protection claims may need proof of Polish income or pension rights in English. We translate ZUS decisions (decyzja o przyznaniu emerytury) and annual statements, including the calculation tables, at the standard per-page price.
