Marriage certificate translation is required for many UK immigration applications, overseas residency applications, and legal proceedings. Our certified translations of marriage certificates are accepted by the Home Office, UKVI, and UK courts.

When Is a Marriage Certificate Translation Required?

You need a certified translation of a marriage certificate when:

  • Applying for a UK spouse or partner visa (and the marriage certificate is in a foreign language)
  • Applying for ILR or British citizenship where evidence of marriage is required
  • Supporting a UKVI application that references marital status
  • Submitting to UK family courts in divorce, inheritance, or custody proceedings
  • Applying for residency in an EU country where proof of marriage is required

What a Marriage Certificate Translation Must Include

Every element of the original marriage certificate must be translated, including:

  • Full names of both parties (including maiden names where shown)
  • Dates of birth and marriage
  • Place of marriage (church, registry office, city)
  • Names and details of witnesses and officiants
  • Official stamps, registration numbers, and seals

Foreign Marriage Certificates: Special Considerations

Marriage certificates from some countries can be complex. Religious marriages, customary marriages, and marriages registered under civil law may have different formats. Some countries issue multiple versions of a marriage certificate — a short-form extract and a long-form certificate. If in doubt, submit both for translation.

For countries where marriage certificates are in a non-Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, Russian, etc.), our specialist translators work from the original script. We do not use transliteration as a substitute for translation.

Divorced Applicants: The Decree Absolute

If you are divorced and remarried, or if your application requires evidence of a previous marriage’s dissolution, you may also need a certified translation of your divorce decree. See our guide on divorce document translation for more details.
