Death certificate translation is required in several legal and administrative situations — including UK probate, inheritance claims, pension applications, and immigration applications where a deceased person’s records are relevant. Our certified translations are accepted by the UK Probate Registry, HMRC, and overseas authorities.

When Is a Death Certificate Translation Required?

You need a certified translation of a death certificate when:

  • Applying for probate or letters of administration for an overseas estate
  • Claiming a deceased person’s pension, insurance, or financial assets
  • Supporting an immigration application that references a deceased family member
  • Registering a death that occurred abroad with UK authorities
  • Inheriting property or assets abroad where UK death documentation is required

Probate and Inheritance

For UK probate involving a foreign-language death certificate, the Probate Registry requires a certified translation alongside the original (or an official copy). The translation must be complete — including the cause of death, names of the deceased and informant, and all official registration details.

Where the estate includes overseas property, the overseas authority may also require the death certificate (or UK grant of probate) translated into the relevant language — we can provide translations in both directions.

Pension and Benefits Claims

UK pension providers and DWP may require evidence of a foreign spouse’s death when processing survivor’s benefits. A certified translation of the overseas death certificate is typically required alongside the original. We provide certified translations of death certificates from all countries.

What to Submit With Your Translation

Always submit a copy of the original death certificate alongside the certified translation. For probate, the Probate Registry typically requires the original document. For HMRC and pension purposes, a certified copy is usually sufficient. Contact the specific authority to confirm their requirements before submitting.
