Academic transcript translation is required when overseas qualifications need to be assessed by UK universities, UCAS, ENIC (formerly UK NARIC), or professional registration bodies. A certified translation ensures your academic records are presented accurately and accepted by UK institutions.

When Is Academic Transcript Translation Required?

Certified translation of academic transcripts is required when:

  • Applying to UK universities with overseas qualifications (UCAS and direct applications)
  • Submitting qualifications to ENIC for a Statement of Comparability
  • Registering with UK professional bodies (GMC, NMC, GDC, SRA, etc.) where overseas qualifications are relevant
  • Applying for a skilled worker visa where educational qualifications are referenced

ENIC and Qualification Recognition

ENIC (formerly UK NARIC) is the UK’s national agency for comparing overseas qualifications with UK equivalents. When submitting documents to ENIC, certified translations are required for transcripts and certificates not issued in English.

A certified translation from a professional agency is generally preferred over a translation produced by the applicant — even if the applicant is bilingual. ENIC may reject self-produced translations.

What Academic Transcripts Include

Academic transcripts typically include:

  • Student’s full name and student number
  • Institution name and location
  • Course names, module titles, and credit values
  • Grades, marks, and grading scale explanations
  • Dates of study and graduation
  • Official stamps and registrar signatures
All of these elements must be translated — including the grading scale, which is important for ENIC comparisons.

University Diplomas vs Transcripts

Many applications require both the degree certificate (diploma) and the academic transcript. These are separate documents and are usually charged separately. The diploma confirms the award; the transcript provides the detailed record of modules and grades. Check with the receiving institution which documents they require before ordering.
